Literacy

At Glengarry Primary School, we are empowered learners and respectful community members who embrace challenge and celebrate growth

At Glengarry Primary School, we are dedicated to providing our students with a strong foundation in literacy, guided by evidence-based practices.

Our school is investigating current evidence-based practices and undertaking the Orton-Gillingham training.

We understand that reading is a multifaceted skill that encompasses several components, including phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension.

Our literacy instruction approach is systematically and explicitly targeted to each of these components, empowering our students to become proficient readers.

Phonemic Awareness

At Glengarry Primary School, we prioritise daily phonemic awareness instruction using programs such as the Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Program. Phonemic awareness is the ability to identify and manipulate individual sounds (phonemes) in spoken words.

Phonics

We utilize a systematic and sequential phonics approach, which we are developing through our Orton-Gillingham training. This evidence-based program focuses on explicit teaching of phoneme-grapheme correspondences, enabling students to decode words accurately and fluently

Vocabulary

At Glengarry Primary School, we believe that a robust vocabulary is essential for comprehension and expressive language development. Teachers provide explicit instruction on word meanings, context clues, and word relationships, equipping students with a rich and diverse vocabulary that supports their reading and communication skills.

Fluency

Fluency practice enhances word accuracy, expression, and comprehension skills, helping students become more fluent readers who can read with ease and understanding.Through our STEM Program, we aim to inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers, mathematicians, and innovators. We encourage students to dream big, think creatively, and embrace the endless possibilities of STEM education.

Comprehension

Comprehension is the ultimate goal of reading, and at Glengarry Primary School, we prioritise explicit comprehension strategies. We teach students to understand, analyze, and interpret texts effectively through strategies such as making predictions, visualizing, summarizing, asking questions, and making connections.
