FAQ'S & IMPORTANT INFO

REPORTS

Reports will be available about your child’s progress at school via Compass. Early in term 1 we have parent teacher meetings so that parents can give teachers information pertinent to their child. At the end of term 2 we hold student led conferences, which is a conference between student/teacher/parent to show case their most triumphant work and some that they have struggled with. A meeting with a teacher is available any time of the year; often an informal chat after school is a sure way of communicating. Please make an appointment to see your teacher if you require more than five minutes. Please do not endeavour to talk to your child’s teacher during class time as their primary responsibility is teaching the children in their care, if there is an important message please call into the school office and the message will be passed onto the teacher.

ASSEMBLY

We have a weekly assembly which, all parents are welcome to attend on each Friday from 3pm.

ATTENDANCE/ LATE ARRIVAL/ EARLY DEPARTURE

Regular punctual attendance is essential if your child is to benefit from continuity of learning. If your child is sick or away please notify us via the Compass app. To support all students’ opportunity to learn, parents are asked to ensure that all students arrive at school before classes commence. The bag bell goes at 8.50am when children can go into classrooms and get organised for the day. Teachers are always in the classrooms then. All children arriving after 9am need to pass through the office to collect a late pass. If you need to collect your child before the end of the school day pass through the office so that they can be logged out, the same proceedure is required when they return.

ZERO TOLERANCE

To ensure we maintain a safe, friendly and fair environment there will be zero tolerance for the following behaviours. Refusal of teacher instruction Swearing or hurtful behaviour such as fighting\teasing, throwing objects Misuse of school equipment, buildings or grounds These behaviours are considered serious and a process will be followed if they occur.

SUPERVISION IN THE PLAYGROUND

While children are in the playground from 8.50am to 3.40pm they are supervised.

FIRST AID

All staff have undertaken regular training in Anaphylaxis, and most of our staff have completed first aid qualifications. All details of children receiving first aid are entered into the injury book in the sick bay. Parents are notified immediately of any head injury or other serious injury. Please be reminded that your child has an up to date asthma or anaphylaxis management plan at the school.

MEDICATION FOR CHILDREN AT SCHOOL

For the safety of children and the effective giving of medication, it is extremely important that parents provide written instructions when medication is required to be administered at school.

ANAPHYLAXIS / ASTHMA

Anaphylaxis is a severe and sudden allergic reaction when a person is exposed to an allergen. The most common allergens in children are eggs, peanuts, tree nuts (e.g. cashews), cow’s milk, fish and shellfish, wheat, soy, certain insect stings and mediations. Anaphylaxis is a serious health issue for a percentage of the population. DEECD and Glengarry Primary School recognises the key to prevention of anaphylaxis is knowledge, awareness and planning. Staff complete anaphylaxis training regularly. Please ensure we have current information on your child/s medical conditions. Asthma is a chronic lung disease that inflames and narrows the airways. It is a requirement that all children attending Glengarry Primary School have an up to date Asthma Plan signed by the child’s doctor. It is the parent/guardians responsibility to ensure the school has appropriately marked medication that is in date.

INFECTIOUS DISEASES AND EXCLUSION PERIODS

Some students will be ill during the school year. Some of these illnesses require the child be kept at home for a period of time particularly if they are infectious. Some of these illnesses are – Chickenpox, Viral Hepatitis, School sores, Measles, Mumps, German Measles, Scarlet Fever, Head Lice.

HEAD LICE

Children can be treated on the same day and return to school. Information regarding head lice can be readily searched for online, from the chemist or we can provide some information at the school. We also have the shire nurse come to check the children’s hair as needed. Please contact the Principal if you require further information.

SICK BAY

If your child is ill at school we will do our best to contact you or your emergency contact person. Please ensure that you update us if you change emergency contacts.

SUNSMART SCHOOL

We are a Sunsmart school and this means that in terms 1 and 4 we have the compulsory wearing of hats. Hats are also recommended for terms 2 and 3 but left to the discretion of the wearer. No tank tops or singlets are to be worn for sun protection reasons. We try to include outdoor activities to be done before 11.00am on hot days. Hats are available to purchase from the front office at a minimal cost.

BOOK CLUB/BOOK FAIR

Book Club magazines are given to the students 8 times per year. Orders are processed and items are distributed through the child’s class. Glengarry Primary School holds an annual Book Fair, with proceeds going to the Library to purchase more books.

ROAD SAFETY AND BIKE SAFETY

If walking to school, please choose the safest route. Point out safe places to cross the road. Look both ways for approaching traffic and always walk, don’t run. We have a school crossing so please instruct your children to use it if they have to cross the Cairnbrook Road. Adults can reinforce this by using it also. Children are to enter the school from gates, please watch for reversing or turning cars. Until Children reach 10 years of age they should be supervised when riding to school. This is due to the development of peripheral vision and reflexes in children. If your child rides a bike to school, take them and show them the route and what to watch out for. Bikes must be walked in front of the school and once inside the school grounds. All bike riders must enter and exit from the front of the school. Helmets must be worn Our school is part of a very busy road\pick up zone. Please ensure you obey the traffic speed of 40kmh during noted times on the sign. Drive carefully when approaching or leaving the school area. Please observe parking restriction signs and the bus zone.

OBJECTS NOT PERMITTED AT SCHOOL

Slingshots, toy guns and knives, roller skates, roller blades, skate boards, scooters, electronic games, bubble or chewing gum and sentimental items are not permitted at school for safety reasons. If a student wishes to show an item that is precious to them please make sure they hand it to the teacher afterwards for safe keeping. Mobile phones and iPods must be handed into the class teacher at the beginning of the day and collected at the end of the day. They are not permitted in schoolbags or in classrooms during the day.
