Student Wellbeing

STUDENT WELFARE

Student wellbeing is important to us and the school’s philosophy is firmly based on the belief that a flexible, happy and positive environment promotes learning, self-esteem and self-confidence. The school uses a Restorative Approach to student behaviour. This is a no blame approach to fixing problems and heals relationships without ongoing resentment. Positive reinforcement enhances this development. Sportsmanship and co-operative participation are encouraged in all students through the House system.

Students are also given the opportunity to participate in decision-making through an active involvement in Junior School Council and other leadership roles, e.g. School, House and Bus Captains. This culminates in a School Council Citizenship Award being presented to a Year 6 student at the annual Year 6 Graduation Dinner.

Glengarry Primary School takes student wellbeing seriously with a proactive approach.

Each classroom has a plan of class rules which are developed and discussed at the beginning of each year. This is supported by the Building Learning Power which promotes co-operation.

HOUSE SYSTEM

Glengarry Primary School has all students placed in one of the 4 houses;

Cairnbrook    – Red

Boola Boola  – Green

Eaglehawk    – Blue

Yarra              – Gold

Each year House Captains are elected from the 5\6 area and they help work with the students at special House sports and events. The House Captains also have a direct role in Student wellbeing.

LEADERSHIP – STUDENTS

Each year we elect School Captains (boy & girl) from Grade 6. These students represent our school in a variety of activities.

There is also a Junior School Council. Classes from 3-6 elect two people to represent their grade, and the Preps to year 2’s on this Council. They meet regularly and one of their tasks is to select ‘Aussie of the Month’ which is presented at assembly.

BUDDIES PROGRAM

Our Buddies Program is designed to create a friendly and caring partnership between Prep and Grade 3/4 Students. The Buddies Program enables younger children to feel safe and cared for while older children feel valued and respected. All grades have a buddy grade for both social and learning activities
